“This, this Invisible Man, then (так это Невидимка)?” asked the man with the black beard (спросил человек с черной бородой), with one hand behind him (заложив одну руку за спину). “I guess it’s about time we saw him (думаю, пора нам его увидеть).”

The window of the inn was suddenly smashed in (окно трактира вдруг разбилось), and there was a screaming and running to and fro in the street (и на улице послышались крики и беготня). The policeman had been standing on the settee staring out (полисмен стоял на скамейке и глядел наружу; settee — /небольшой/ диван, канапе; скамейка), craning to see who was at the door (стараясь увидеть, кто стоит у двери; to crane — вытягиватьшею/чтобылучшеразглядеть/; crane — журавль). He got down with raised eyebrows (он слез и поднял брови /удивленно/).

“It’s that (это он: «это то /самое/»),” he said.

“Here you are,” said the barman. “Come in here.” And he held up the flap of the bar.

Mr. Marvel rushed behind the bar as the summons outside was repeated.

“Don’t open the door,” he screamed. “Please don’t open the door. Where shall I hide?”

“This, this Invisible Man, then?” asked the man with the black beard, with one hand behind him. “I guess it’s about time we saw him.”

The window of the inn was suddenly smashed in, and there was a screaming and running to and fro in the street. The policeman had been standing on the settee staring out, craning to see who was at the door. He got down with raised eyebrows.

“It’s that,” he said.

The barman stood in front of the bar-parlour door (трактирщик встал перед дверью комнаты) which was now locked on Mr. Marvel (где заперли Марвела), stared at the smashed window (поглядел на разбитое окно), and came round to the two other men (и подошел к двоим другим = своимпосетителям).

Everything was suddenly quiet (все внезапно затихло).

“I wish I had my truncheon (жаль, у меня нет дубинки: «я хотел бы, чтобы у меня была дубинка»),” said the policeman, going irresolutely to the door (сказал полисмен, нерешительно подходя к двери). “Once we open, in he comes (как только откроем, он войдет). There’s no stopping him (и ничем его не остановить).”

“Don’t you be in too much hurry about that door (а вы не очень торопитесь с дверью = открывать дверь; to be in a hurry — спешить, торопиться),” said the anaemic cabman, anxiously (тревожно сказал худосочный извозчик).

“Draw the bolts (отодвиньте засовы),” said the man with the black beard (сказал чернобородый), “and if he comes — (если он войдет…)” He showed a revolver in his hand (он показал револьвер, /который держал/ в руке).

“Draw the bolts,” said the man with the black beard, “and if he comes — ” He showed a revolver in his hand.

“That won’t do (так не пойдет),” said the policeman; “that’s murder (это убийство = может произойти убийство).”

“I know what country I’m in (я знаю, в какой стране нахожусь),” said the man with the beard (сказал чернобородый /слова принадлежат американцу; в США считалось допустимым убийство в целях самообороны/). “I’m going to let off at his legs (я собираюсь стрелять в ноги). Draw the bolts.”

“Not with that blinking thing going off behind me (а если эта чертова штуковина выстрелит мне в спину; blinking — дьявольский, чертовский /используется для усиления/; to blink — мерцать; to go off — выстреливать /об оружии/),” said the barman, craning over the blind (сказал трактирщик, вытягивая шею и /выглядывая в окно/ над занавеской).

“Very well (хорошо),” said the man with the black beard, and stooping down, revolver ready (сказал чернобородый, и нагнувшись, /держа/ револьвер наготове), drew them himself (сам отодвинул засовы). Barman, cabman, and policeman faced about (трактирщик, извозчик и полисмен повернулись лицом /к двери/).

“Come in (войдите),” said the bearded man in an undertone (сказал вполголоса чернобородый), standing back and facing the unbolted doors with his pistol behind him (отступая и стоя лицом к отпертой двери, держа револьвер за спиной). No one came in, the door remained closed (никто не вошел, дверь оставалась закрытой). Five minutes afterwards when a second cabman pushed his head in cautiously (пять минут спустя, когда второй извозчик осторожно заглянул /в трактир/; to push — толкать, пихать; проталкивать/ся/), they were still waiting (они по-прежнему ждали), and an anxious face peered out of the bar-parlour and supplied information (и беспокойное, тревожное лицо выглянуло из комнаты и кое-что сообщило; to supply — предоставлять, снабжать).

“Are all the doors of the house shut (все ли двери в доме закрыты)?” asked Marvel. “He’s going round — prowling round (он ходит кругом — вынюхивает; to prowl — бродить, рыскать). He’s as artful as the devil (он хитер как черт; artful — ловкий, умелый; хитрый).”

“Good Lord (Боже мой)!” said the burly barman (воскликнул дородный трактирщик). “There’s the back (задняя дверь)! Just watch them doors (следите за этими дверями)! I say — (ну и ну…)!” He looked about him helplessly (он беспомощно огляделся). The bar-parlour door slammed and they heard the key turn (дверь /соседней/ комнаты захлопнулась, и они услышали, как повернулся ключ).

“There’s the yard door and the private door (есть еще дверь во двор и отдельный вход). The yard door — (дверь во двор…)”

He rushed out of the bar (он бросился из трактира).

In a minute he reappeared with a carving-knife in his hand (через минуту он снова появился с ножом для разделки мяса в руке; to carve — /вы/резать; разделывать).

“The yard door was open (дверь во двор была открыта)!” he said, and his fat underlip dropped (сказал он, и его толстая нижняя губа отвисла).

“He may be in the house now (теперь он может быть в доме)!” said the first cabman (сказал первый извозчик).

“He’s not in the kitchen (в кухне его нет),” said the barman. “There’s two women there (там две служанки; woman — женщина; служанка, уборщица /прислуга женского пола/), and I’ve stabbed every inch of it with this little beef slicer (и я всю кухню проверил вот этим ножом: «проколол каждый дюйм»; to stab — колоть, ранитьножом; тыкать; beef — говядина, мяснаятуша; slicer — нож/длярезкиломтиками, натонкиеслои/).
