spur [spǝ: ] guard-room [ˈɡɑ: dru (:) m] prosperity [prɔˈsperɪtɪ]
After that they went on again; and now the road struck westwards and left the river, and the great shoulder of the south-pointing mountain-spur drew ever nearer. At length they reached the hill path. It scrambled steeply up, and they plodded slowly one behind the other, till at last in the late afternoon they came to the top of the ridge and saw the wintry sun going downwards to the West.
Here they found a flat place without a wall on three sides, but backed to the North by a rocky face in which there was an opening like a door. From that door there was a wide view East and South and West. “Here, ” said Balin, “in the old days we used always to keep watchmen, and that door behind leads into a rock-hewn chamber that was made here as a guardroom. There were several places like it round the Mountain. But there seemed small need for watching in the days of our prosperity, and the guards were made over comfortable, perhaps — otherwise we might have had longer warnings of the coming of the dragon, and things might have been different. Still, “here we can now lie hid and sheltered for a while, and can see much without being seen. ”
“Not much use (не особо много пользы), if we have been seen (если нас видели) coming here (идущими сюда), ” said Dori, who was always looking up towards the Mountain’s peak (который все время посматривал вверх, на вершину Горы), as if he expected to see Smaug (словно он ожидал увидеть Смауга) perched there (усевшегося там) like a bird on a steeple (словно птица на колокольне).
“We must take our chance of that (мы должны воспользоваться этим шансом), ” said Thorin. “We can go no further to-day (дальше мы сегодня не сможем пойти). ”
“Hear, hear (правильно, правильно)!” cried Bilbo (закричал Бильбо), and flung himself on the ground (и бросился на пол).
In the rock-chamber (в этой комнатке в скале) there would have been room for a hundred (было бы достаточно места на сто /человек/), and there was a small chamber further in (и подальше внутри была еще комната поменьше), more removed from the cold outside (более удаленная от холода снаружи). It was quite deserted (она была совершенно заброшена; to desert — бросать, покидать, оставлять); not even wild animals seemed (казалось, что даже дикие животные) to have used it (не пользовались ей) in all the days of Smaug’s dominion (за все дни владычества Смауга). There they laid their burdens (там они сложили свою ношу); and some threw themselves down at once and slept (и некоторые немедленно бросились на пол и заснули), but the others sat near the outer door (но остальные /остались/ сидеть рядом с наружной/внешней дверью) and discussed their plans (и обсуждали свои планы).
In all their talk (во всех своих разговорах) they came perpetually back to one thing (они бесконечно возвращались к одной вещи; perpetual — вечный; постоянный): where was Smaug (где же был Смауг)? They looked West and there was nothing (они посмотрели на Запад и ничего там не увидели: «и там ничего не было»), and East there was nothing (и на Востоке не было ничего), and in the South there was no sign of the dragon (и на Юге не было ни одного признака дракона), but there was a gathering of very many birds (но там были многочисленные стаи птиц; gathering — собирание, сборище). At that they gazed and wondered (на них они /долго/ смотрели и гадали /что это было/); but they were no nearer understanding it (но они так ни до чего и не додумались: «но они были не ближе к пониманию этого»; understanding — понимание, осмысление), when the first cold stars came out (когда взошли: «появились/вышли» первые холодные звезды).

Chapter 14. Fire and Water
(Глава 14. Огонь и вода)
Now if you wish, like the dwarves (теперь, если вы хотите, как и гномы), to hear news of Smaug (узнать: «услышать» новости о Смауге), you must go back again (вы снова должны вернуться) to the evening (к тому самому вечеру) when he smashed the door (когда он завалил дверь; to smash — разбить (ся) вдребезги; ломать, ударять, разбить) and flew off in rage (и улетел в ярости), two days before (двумя днями раньше).
The men of the lake-town Esgaroth were mostly indoors (люди из города Эсгарота на озере были по большей части в домах; indoors — в помещении, в доме, в комнате), for the breeze was from the black East and chill (так как дул ветер с темного Востока и /распространялся/ холод); chill — холод, холодная погода), but a few were walking on the quays (но несколько /человек/ прогуливались по набережным), and watching (и наблюдали), as they were fond of doing (так как им нравилось это делать; to be fond of smb., smth. — любить кого-либо, что-либо; fond — любящий, нежный), the stars shine out (за звездами сияющими, /отражаясь/) from the smooth patches of the lake (от ровных и гладких отрезков на озере; patch — заплата, клочок, лоскут; участок) as they opened in the sky (как только они появились на небе; to open — открывать, раскрываться; начинаться). From their town (от их города) the Lonely Mountain was mostly screened (Одинокая Гора была по большей части закрыта; screen — ширма, завеса; to screen — прикрывать) by the low hills (низкими холмами) at the far end of the lake (у дальнего края озера), through a gap in which (через прореху между которыми: «в которых»; gap — брешь, пролом, щель) the Running River came down from the North (с Севера текла: «ниспадала» Быстротечная Река). Only its high peak could they see (они могли видеть только ее высокую вершину) in clear weather (и то в ясную погоду), and they looked seldom at it (и они редко смотрели на нее), for it was ominous and dreary (так как она была зловещей и безотрадной) even in the light of morning (даже при свете утра). Now it was lost and gone (теперь же она потерялась и исчезла), blotted in the dark (заслоненная темнотой; toblot — делать кляксы, пачкать; затмевать, затемнять).
indoors [ˌɪnˈdɔ: z] screen [skri: n] dreary [ˈdrɪǝrɪ]
Now if you wish, like the dwarves, to hear news of Smaug, you must go back again to the evening when he smashed the door and flew off in rage, two days before.
The men of the lake-town Esgaroth were mostly indoors, for the breeze was from the black East and chill, but a few were walking on the quays, and watching, as they were fond of doing, the stars shine out from the smooth patches of the lake as they opened in the sky. From their town the Lonely Mountain was mostly screened by the low hills at the far end of the lake, through a gap in which the Running River came down from the North. Only its high peak could they see in clear weather, and they looked seldom at it, for it was ominous and dreary even in the light of morning. Now it was lost and gone, blotted in the dark.
Suddenly it flickered back to view (внезапно она вспыхнула и погасла у всех на глазах: «назад в поле зрения»; view — вид; видимость, поле зрения); a brief glow touched it and faded (короткое зарево коснулось ее и исчезло).
“Look (смотрите)!” said one (сказал один). “The lights again (снова огни)! Last night the watchmen saw them start and fade (прошлой ночью караульные видели, как они возникали и исчезали) from midnight until dawn (от полуночи до рассвета). Something is happening up there (что-то там вверху происходит). ” “Perhaps the King under the Mountain (возможно, что Король под Горой) is forging gold (кует золото), ” said another (сказал другой). “It is long since he went north (уже много времени прошло, как он ушел на север). It is time (самое время) the songs began to prove themselves again (чтобы песни начали снова сбываться; to prove — доказывать, удостоверять; оказываться). ” “Which king (какой король)?” said another with a grim voice (сказал другой зловещим голосом). “As like as not (не исключено: «как вероятно, как и нет») it is the marauding fire of the Dragon (что это хищнический огонь Дракона), the only king under the Mountain (единственного короля под Горой) we have ever known (которого мы когда-либо знали). ”
