For two days I've been laid up with swollen tonsils; I can just swallow hot milk, and that is all. `What were your parents thinking of not to have those tonsils out when you were a baby?' the doctor wished to know. I'm sure I haven't an idea, but I doubt if they were thinking much about me.

I hasten to assure you (я тороплюсь заверить вас) that I am young and happy and exuberant (что я молода, счастлива и жизнерадостна; exuberant — роскошный, обильный; полный сил, воодушевления); and I trust you are the same (и надеюсь, что вы тоже). Youth has nothing to do with birthdays (юность не имеет ничего общего с днями рождения), only with alivedness of spirit (а только с живостью духа), so even if your hair is grey, Daddy (поэтому, даже если ваши волосы седы, Папочка), you can still be a boy (вы все еще можете быть мальчишкой).

I just read this over before sealing it. I don't know why I cast such a misty atmosphere over life. I hasten to assure you that I am young and happy and exuberant; and I trust you are the same. Youth has nothing to do with birthdays, only with alivedness of spirit, so even if your hair is grey, Daddy, you can still be a boy.

Your cheque for my family came yesterday (ваш чек для моей семьи пришел вчера). Thank you so much (большое вам спасибо)! I cut gymnasium (я сбежала с гимнастики) and took it down to them right after luncheon (и отнесла его к ним прямо после ленча), and you should have seen the girl's face (видели бы вы лицо девушки)! She was so surprised and happy and relieved (она была настолько удивлена, счастлива и успокоена/почувствовала облегчение; to relieve — облегчать, ослаблять; успокаивать, утешать) that she looked almost young (что выглядела /она/ почти молодой); and she's only twenty-four (а ей всего лишь двадцать четыре).
