Four sections of the book provide a detailed historic account of book printing in Moscow and overall literary culture in the XVII century Russia. The book substantively reviewed previously dominating concept that has rejected historic and educational significance of early Moscow book prints. The first section of the book is based on a thorough analysis of documents from the Archive of Prikaz Knigopechatnogo Dela and Prikaz manager’s archive and provides extended repertoire of publications and for the first time presents exact number of copies in each print run, cost of production and prices of books that were sold to public. It also discusses functional designation of each book, and their role in the life of society, state, Russian Orthodox Church, and people. The section uses documents to show that printed books in Russia were already widely circulated and used during second decade of the XVII century and their role in establishing and strengthening of the Romanov’s dynasty. The second section uses analysis of thousands of period books printed in Moscow and provides specific examples of extraordinary destinies of books and people and inextricable link between man and the book in the course of historical development of Russia. The third section summarizes results of long-term collective work on scientific description of surviving copies of early Cyrillic editions in collections of Perm, Tver and Yaroslavl regions and collections of early Cyrillic printed books in the Vatican and New York Libraries. The last section, allows the reader to go beyond the XVII century and learn about new discoveries in the history of printing in the XVI century and the destiny of early Cyrillic publications in the traditional culture of Russian Old Believers in XVIII–XX centuries.

The publication is intended for researchers and students of culture, literature and history of the state and Church of the late medieval Rus', and all those interested in the history of the book and traditional Russian book culture.
