I didn't wake up till I found myself on my feet singing the hymn, and then I was awfully sorry I hadn't listened to the sermon; I should like to know more of the psychology of a man who would pick out such a hymn. This was it:

Come, leave your sports and earthly toys

And join me in celestial joys.

Or else, dear friend, a long farewell.

I leave you now to sink to hell.

I find that it isn't safe (я нахожу, что это небезопасно) to discuss religion with the Semples (обсуждать религию с Семплами). Their God (их Бог) (whom they have inherited intact (которого они унаследовали целиком и полностью; intact — неповрежденный, целый, нетронутый) from their remote Puritan ancestors (от своих далеких пуританских предков; remote — отдаленный, дальний; дальний, далекий /о родственниках/)) is a narrow (это ограниченный; narrow — узкий, тесный; ограниченный /об уме и т.п./), irrational (иррациональный/нелогичный/неразумный), unjust (несправедливый), mean (неприятный/злой; mean — посредственный, плохой; низкий, подлый), revengeful (мстительный; revenge — месть, мщение), bigoted Person (нетерпимый/фанатичный субъект). Thank heaven I don't inherit God from anybody (благодарение небесам, что я ни от кого не унаследовала Бога)! I am free to make mine up as I wish Him (я вольна придумать такого своего Бога: «Его», которого пожелаю; to make up — составлять; выдумывать, измышлять). He's kind and sympathetic (он добр и полон сочувствия) and imaginative (и /одарен/ богатым воображением; to imagine — воображать, представлять себе; выдумывать, сочинять) and forgiving (и снисходителен; to forgive — прощать) and understanding (и чуток; understanding — понимающий, разумный; отзывчивый, чуткий) — and He has a sense of humour (и обладает чувством юмора).

I am free to make mine up as I wish Him. He's kind and sympathetic and imaginative and forgiving and understanding — and He has a sense of humour.

I like the Semples immensely (Семплы мне очень-очень нравятся; immense — безмерный, необъятный; огромный, колоссальный); their practice is so superior to their theory (их практика настолько лучше их теории). They are better than their own God (они лучше, чем их собственный Бог). I told them so (я им так и сказала) — and they are horribly troubled (и они ужасно обеспокоились). They think I am blasphemous (они считают, что я богохульствую) — and I think they are (а мне кажется, что они)! We've dropped theology from our conversation (мы исключили теологию = рассуждения о Боге из наших разговоров; to drop — капать; ронять; бросать).
